Jamilia Land was 10 when an Oakland police officer pointed a gun at her and ordered her to shut up.
“When he did that, my father damn near lost his mind,” Ms. Land recalls of the long-ago incident.
She had witnessed the officer harassing her father. Once his ire turned on her, a tussle ensued between the two men and her father, Willie Elvin Land, was beaten with a baton.
“I remember how traumatic it was, seeing my father lay there on the ground just helpless and afraid,” she said. “That was the first time I had seen my father afraid. … It changed me.” ....

Relatives and relative strangers. A vicious virus united us with a prevailing sense of loss. It got to the point when we cringed every time the phone rang or we turned on the television, fearing that there would be news of yet another person passing away. This year has seen the deaths of legends and loved ones alike. Many across the country, and close to home, were claimed by COVID-19, while others succumbed to the ravages of illness or time. Others were children who barely had time to make their marks in this world.
As a rough year ends, The Sacramento OBSERVER takes a minute to reflect and acknowledge some of the many Blacks who died in 2020. They are gone, but not forgotten. ....

Bodies Of Slain Teens Returns To Louisiana — The Sacramento Observer

Under the careful management of Ramsey Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Inc. in Arden-Arcade, the remains of Dewayne James Jr. and his brother Sa’Quan Reed-James were transported back to their hometown of Monroe, Louisiana, on Dec. 15.
The bodies of Sa’Quan Reed James, left, and Dewayne James Jr., right, have been flown back to Monroe, Louisiana for burial. The two brothers were shot and killed at Arden Mall Nov. 27.
Dr. Anthony Ramsey Wallace, president and CEO of Wallace Funeral Home, said the brothers, who only been in Sacramento for less than two years, will be buried on Friday, Dec. 18.
The funeral home received custody of the pair on Dec. 3, “And then we dressed them up and casketed them,” Wallace said. ....

Dec. 17 A 9-year-old girl hit by stray gunfire at a Del Paso Heights park. A 27-year-old father randomly targeted as he waited in line at an Arden Arcade market with his 4-year-old daughter at his side. Two teenage brothers killed while they and others shopped on Black Friday at Arden Fair mall.
Even as the coronavirus pandemic shut down much of society, deadly crime in Sacramento County spiked in 2020.
These are just a few of the victims of violent crime in Sacramento County as the number of homicides increased this year, even as the COVID-19 pandemic forced various phases of shutdowns that closed schools and businesses to prevent further spread of the coronavirus. ....

SACRAMENTO, Calif. The bodies of the two brothers killed in the Arden Fair Mall shooting on Black Friday were flown out of Sacramento and back to their hometown of Monroe, LA., Tuesday night.
The family said they wanted the community to see the images of 17-year-old Sa Quan Reed and 19-year-old Dewayne James Jr. being transported to their final resting place as a way of underscoring the sad reality that far many too youth are facing in Sacramento and beyond. ....
