Hampton Falls couple named town’s hog wranglers

HAMPTON FALLS – The town has two new hog wranglers.
According to Selectman Ed Beattie, Todd and Stephanie Santora were given the honor of being selected as Hampton Falls hog reeve and keeper of the pound for the coming year at Saturday’s deliberative session. 
“I’ve already called him to come and a look at my sheep,” Beattie joked.
A holdover office from the Colonial era, although the notion of a hog reeve brings chuckles today, the position goes back centuries in Hampton Falls, which celebrates its 300th anniversary next year. In centuries past, the job of hog reeve was common in towns throughout the state to protect communities from large hogs or other animals who broke out of their pens, causing havoc in neighborhoods, eating crops and damaging property. ....
