NCA’s So much ambition to do so much for the trees on national land. Yet there was an obvious lingering question, writes columnist PAUL COSTIGAN… Paul Costigan. The NCA has existed in its present form since 1989. During those 30 years this body was supposed to be looking after the national areas. Given that it has only last week released a tree management policy – what has it been doing? ....
THE federal government has today (May 6) released a “Tree Management Policy”, which will see tree canopy increase from 33 per cent to 40 per cent in the National Triangle and other central areas by 2030. Overseen by the National Capital Authority, the authority will immediately begin the implementation strategy for the roll out, which will also include improving the age diversity of the treescape by ensuring at least 10 per cent of the population are juvenile, and improving the existing diversity of the species to ensure that no one species represents more than 10 per cent of the population. When announcing the policy, Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Territories Nola Marino said with ageing trees in the ACT, it’s timely to plan for its future. ....

COLUMNIST Paul Costigan is on the mark again in “Canberra Matters” on April 22 (“Time for leadership in good landscape design”) with his remarks about poor retail sales outside the Canberra Centre. One major reason for this was passed over, namely, car parking. You park in the multi-storey car parks, walk directly into the centre, shop then go home. There’s no foot traffic through the old heart of Canberra, through places such as Garema Place. These desolate areas and closing shops will increase if and when the current government surrenders the current car parks outside the Magistrates Courts and the Canberra Museum and Gallery to apartment builders. Farewell Sydney and Melbourne Buildings’ restaurants and shops. We do not all ride push bikes or catch the tram . ....
