After deputies in North Carolina fatally shot a Black man last week, law enforcement offered promises of transparency. But few facts emerged – a void of information that raised suspicions and helped stoke national outrage, according to experts.
Andrew Brown Jr. was killed April 21 as sheriff s deputies tried to execute drug-related search and arrest warrants at his house in the town of Elizabeth City. Since then, little official comment has followed, despite pleas from Brown s family and mounting legal pressure. ....

Checking In With… The Office! A Musical Parody's Devina Sabnis

What is your typical day like now?
I wake up around 8:30 AM. Then I get the coffee brewing, while I take a shower and do vocal warm-ups. After I drink my coffee and eat a small breakfast, I put on my mask, grab my script, and head to the theatre for rehearsal! I love rehearsal! It’s not only an opportunity to practice on the show, but it also allows me to get to know and hang out with the cast, many of whom are good friends. During lunch, if I haven’t packed a lunch, I usually find a cast member to get lunch with. We often bring lunch back to the theatre and spread out six feet away to chat and eat. Rehearsal is over around 6 PM. When I get back to my apartment, I cook with my sister or we get take-out. After dinner, I either watch a movie with my sister, FaceTime my friends, binge Netflix in my bed, or play ....

OAKLAND, Calif., April 22, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) The Tom Bane Civil Rights Act, California Civil Code section 52.1, is California’s most broadly applicable civil rights law – the state counterpart to the Federal Civil Rights Act, 42 U.S.C. § 1983. The Bane Act forbids people from interfering with a person’s constitutional rights by threat, intimidation, or coercion. Importantly, qualified immunity, which undermines access to civil justice in so many federal claims, does not apply to violations of the Bane Act. Unfortunately, as the federal civil rights act has come under sustained attack, so too has the Bane Act, leaving it inadequate redress many civil rights violations. Senate Bill 2 (SB 2) was introduced for the 2021 legislative ses ....

San Diego civil rights lawyers welcome Chauvin verdict — warily

Civil rights lawyers in San Diego welcomed the verdict in the Derek Chauvin murder trial, but were cautious whether the outcome would lead immediately to significant changes in policing and police accountability.
“It’s hard to tell,” said San Diego lawyer Julia Yoo, the president of the National Police Accountability Project, an organization of more than 600 members who advocate for more accountability for law enforcement. She has represented numerous individuals and families in lawsuits against local police departments.
“I think it is an important step and important moment for the George Floyd family, and the entire nation,” Yoo said. “I hope it’s a wake up call for civil rights across the country.” ....

Demonstrators march through downtown on April 9, 2021 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
(Bloomberg) Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who knelt on George Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes last May, was convicted of second-degree murder in his politically explosive trial.
Chauvin was charged in the death of Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man accused of passing a counterfeit bill at a convenience store. Under Minnesota law he faces as many as four decades in prison, although he may get much less time under state sentencing guidelines. The jury got the case on April 19 following three weeks of emotional and sometimes graphic testimony from medical experts, family members and anguished bystanders. In rendering its verdict on Tuesday, it also convicted Chauvin, 45, of the les ....
