Collection digitisation policy


1. Introduction
The National Library of Australia has been digitising its collection in all formats since the early 2000s and is a leader in the Australian library sector in digitisation, as well as in the discovery and delivery of digitised content on the collaborative Trove service. The long-term preservation of digital master files created is an integral part of the digitisation processes. The Library works actively with external funding organisations to grow the corpus of digitised content for research, knowledge creation and enjoyment by Australians.
2. Policy Aims
This policy aims to provide a statement of the Library’s current approach to digitisation. It covers all digitisation activities undertaken by Library staff as well as external providers under contract to the Library. ....

Introduction
On behalf of the Council of the National Library of Australia (the accountable authority), we present the National Library’s 2019–20 Corporate Plan, as required under paragraph 31(1)(b) of the
Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013. The plan is prepared in accordance with the
Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Rule 2014. The Library’s Corporate Plan expands on the information contained in the 2019–20 Portfolio Budget Statements.
We will report against the plan in the National Library of Australia’s Annual Report, tabled in parliament each year by the Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts. The plan is the principal planning document that outlines the purpose, priorities and actions of the Library. ....

A new mandate for the digital age: implementing electronic legal deposit at the National Library of Australia

In February 2016 the legal deposit provisions in Australia’s Copyright Act were expanded to include digital publications and the public .au web domain. The result of twenty years of advocacy, the new provisions marked a dramatic shift in how Australia collects, preserves and makes accessible the full online publishing landscape.
Legal deposit has been the core of the National Library’s collections and services since it was introduced in Australia in 1912. It remains the most important mechanism by which national and state libraries can preserve the published record of their countries or states. But since the emergence of electronic publishing in the 1980s and online publishing in the 1990s, the Australian legal deposit scheme has been only performing half its role. ....

Purpose of Collecting
The Library collects documentary resources relating to Australia and the Australian people so that the Australian community now and in the future can discover, learn and create new knowledge. The Library’s collections extend understanding of issues of contemporary significance, build strong community connections and underpin its leadership activities.
Scope of Collecting
The National Library of Australia’s statutory role is to maintain and develop a national collection of library material, including a comprehensive collection of library material relating to Australia and the Australian people. This role is recognised through the National Library Act as well as the legal deposit provisions in the Copyright Act. ....
