GamCare has argued there is an ‘imminent need’ to discuss gambling-related harm among young people, with more than 7 in 10 (71.5%) calls to the
National Gambling Helpline from under-18s being from those directly experiencing an issue with gambling
These calls came from young people struggling with a gambling-related issue personally, as opposed to 20% expressing concern about a friend or family member, and 8.5% who were considered ‘at risk’ of developing harmful betting behaviours.
User data from the charity’s support services found that 77% of young people who gamble use online operators or conduct the activity through esports betting and ‘social gaming’. ....

Total Gamstop registrations pass 200,000 as sign-ups increase in early 2021

Online self-exclusion scheme Gamstop now has over 200,000 registrants, following record numbers of sign-ups in the first two months of 2021.
In February, registrations increased 21% year-on-year, with close to 6,500 people registering with the scheme. This followed a 14% increase in January, which saw over 7,000 new registrations.
Gamstop recorded its highest daily figure of registrations on 22 February, as 326 people signed up to the scheme within 24 hours.
The scheme said 71% of its registrants are male and 29% female, with the number of women registered recently surpassing 55,000. The majority of registrants come from the 18-34 age group, at 59%. ....

Review of unlicensed online gambling in the UK’ report was published by the Betting and Gaming Council on 4 February. This was three weeks after the Chief Executive of the Gambling Commission had written to Carolyn Harris commenting:
“We know that licensed operators and their trade bodies are concerned about the impact of the illegal market, but our own evidence suggests that the impact may be being exaggerated”.
That comment surely needs to be reconsidered in the context of survey findings in the PwC report that found the proportion of UK online gamblers using an unlicensed operator has more than doubled from 2.2% to 4.5% in the last 1-2 years, equating to an increase from about 210,000 players in 2018-19 to about 460,000 in 2020. It also found that the share of online stakes with unlicensed operators had almost doubled from 1.2% in 2018/19 to 2.3%, corresponding to a doubling of stakes with unlicensed online operators from £1.4 billion to £2.8 billion. ....
