COVID 19: Biosecurity in question at US germ labs – Veterans Today | Military Foreign Affairs Policy Journal for Clandestine Services


Abstract
Biosafety Level 4 labs are in the spotlight as speculation swirls that Covid-19 may have emerged from such a facility in either China or the US.  In the US, the mass proliferation of high-containment germ labs since 9/11, and its track record of safety lapses, remains a concern with the renewed interest in the field of biodefense.  In light of past accidents of anthrax leaks in US labs and SARS leak in Chinese labs, there needs to be improved regulation and governance of germ labs in order to mitigate rising risks of accidents that threaten public health, redress safety lapse providing easy access of pathogens by terrorists, and prevent a biodefense arms race. ....

Organisations hop to it on wallaby control in bid to prevent $84m annual bill


It’s a warning that appeared to be heard by Government, with a Budget 2020 pledge for $27.4 million in funding over the next four years for national eradication efforts.
According to Ron Keyzer​, the Central North Island wallaby programme leader, without action “we could lose more of our forest taonga”.
He said the animals have a “huge appetite” for seedlings and shrubs, which prevents the regeneration of native bush.
He said they will also eat grass, depriving livestock of food and “reducing stock rates and browse exotic forest seedlings, causing economic loses for the forestry sector”.
“It has been estimated that if we don’t stop the spread of wallabies it could cost New Zealanders $84 million a year by 2025,” he said. ....
