Press Release Senate oks 7 bills renaming, converting schools The Senate today adopted on third and final reading seven local bills that seek to rename State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) as well as convert state colleges into state universities. Senator Joel Villanueva, chair of the Committee on Higher and Technical-Vocational Education, expressed his gratitude to the body for the swift passage of the seven bills, saying these measures would uplift the academic communities in the various SUCs. The passage on third reading of these local bills renaming our SUCs and converting colleges into state universities in the middle of the pandemic is timely, relevant and also uplifting to the communities who will stand to benefit from these developments. This is definitely a good news for our people in Abra Agusan del Sur, Basilan, Camarines Sur, Davao de Oro, Occidental Mindoro, and Surigao del Sur, Villanueva said. ....
University of Saskatchewan (USask website) In a virtual ceremony held on May 19, 2021, Consul General Zaldy Patron expressed optimism that the cooperation between the Philippine universities and the USask will “go a long way and will be beneficial for all parties”. Under the MOU, the parties will collaborate on several areas, including in the exchanges and internships for students, faculty, and staff, and in joint research and development projects. SunStar SunStar File May 21, 2021 A TOTAL of 2,236 college students in Central Visayas have availed of the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) 7’s Student Financial Assistance Programs (StuFAPs) for the academic year (AY) 2020-2021. Melissa Castillote, person in charge of the Ched 7 scholarship office, made the report during a press conference on Thursday, May 20, 2021 as part of the Ched’s 27th founding anniversary celebration and first National Higher Education Day celebration from May 17 to 24, 2021. She said 2,107 eligible students had availed of merit scholarships in the region, and there were 105 beneficiaries of grants-in-aid and 24 grantees of other StuFAPs. These constitute a total funding of P41.7 million. ....
