Five Acadiana students were named National Merit Scholars, each receiving $2,500 and distinction few can boast. They are among only 2,500 Merit Scholars nationwide 33 in Louisiana chosen from a talent pool of some 16,000 finalists in the 2021 scholarship program. Four hail from Lafayette Parish: Oliver Craddock of Lafayette High; Arden Frantzen of Episcopal School of Acadiana; Rafael Hernandez of Teurlings Catholic High School; and Alaina Le of St. Thomas More Catholic High School. A fifth, AnaLaysha Burgess-Collazo, is from Jeanerette and attends the Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts, a public residential high school in Natchitoches. Southeastern Louisiana quarterback Cole Kelley won the Walter Payton Award on Saturday as the best offensive player in the NCAA s Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The former Teurlings Catholic standout is the 34th player to win the Payton Award, which is named for the Pro Football Hall of Fame running back who played college football at Jackson State. Before 1995, the Payton Award was given out to the most outstanding player in FCS. However, it was changed to recognize the best offensive player after the Buck Buchanan Award was created for the nation s best defensive player. Past winners of the Payton Award include Steve McNair, Tony Romo, Brian Westbrook, and Jimmy Garoppolo. ....
Cole Kelley has earned his second All-American honors. The former Teurlings Catholic star and Southeastern Louisiana senior quarterback has been named to the Associated Press All-America Team. Less than a week after earning first-team honors from STATS Perform, Kelley earned second-team honors from the AP. Kelley may soon take home another prestigious honor. Kelley is among three finalists for the Walter Payton Award, which is awarded to FCS’ top offensive player. The other finalists are Eastern Washington quarterback Eric Barriere and Sacred Heart running back Julius Chestnut. During the spring season, Kelley led the Southland Conference with 2,662 yards passing and 27 touchdowns responsible for (18 passing, seven rushing and two receiving). ....
