U.S. News & World Report released its annual rankings of 24,000 public high schools with Oakland County’s International Academy again among the top 50 nationwide. International Academy, a consortium which has about 1,500 students who reside in 13 Oakland County school districts including Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Huron Valley and South Lyon, ranked third in Michigan and 43rd nationwide. Also ranking in the top 10 in Michigan were Novi High School at #7 and Northville High School, #10. “Part of the reason we do well on rankings like this is that all of our students and families understand when they enroll in ninth grade that we are an all International Baccalaureate high school,” Associate Principal Chris Smith said. “It’s highly rigorous, the most challenging program a student in the United States can sign up for in high school… It attracts students who are highly motivated for an academic program.” ....
April 29, 2021 By Jessica Mathews / [email protected] A man is facing charges of disorderly conduct and resisting/obstructing police following an incident in South Lyon. Authorities say staff members at South Lyon High School on Tuesday advised the School Resource Deputy that a suspicious vehicle with a man and a dog were parked in the staff parking lot and appeared to have been in an accident. A Deputy with the Oakland County Sheriffâs Office Lyon Township substation located the vehicle and spoke to the driver who told the deputy he was waiting for a tow truck as his vehicle had a flat tire and body damage. As they spoke, the Deputy said he detected the odor of intoxicants, at which point the man became highly agitated and placed the dog between his legs and made repeated racial slurs directed at the Deputy and reportedly threatened to âlet his dog looseâ. ....

High school staff members told the school resource deputy close to 1 p.m. April 27 that a suspicious vehicle had been in the staff parking lot for about two hours, according to deputies with the Oakland County Sheriff s Office. The vehicle apparently had been in an accident and was occupied by a man and a dog. Police said the man told the deputy that he was waiting for a tow truck because his vehicle had a flat tire along with some body damage. ....
April 6, 2021 By Jon King / [email protected] As case rates continue to soar across Michigan, 84 new COVID-19 outbreaks were reported at schools in the state, including six in Livingston County. According to data released Monday by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, 15 students and one staff member were infected with the virus at school or at a school-related function in Livingston County. They include 9 students at Brighton High School, five students at Hartland High School as well as a student and a staff member at the IXL Hamburg pre-school. Also reporting an outbreak were Livingston Classical Academy in Whitmore Lake, which had six students infected, and South Lyon High School, with three students infected. ....
