Duck bag down on opening day

Although good weather conditions in Waitaki favoured the ducks, hunters did not come away empty-handed on opening day of the game bird season.
Central South Island Fish & Game officer Rhys Adams said a survey of hunters revealed duck numbers on opening weekend were slightly below average for the Waitaki district.
The conditions were against most hunters, Mr Adams said.
“Both the weather and the dry conditions – maybe that affected breeding a bit this year,” he said.
“All in all, it’s not a negative. The reality is, we have great hunting here, even on a season like this one. ....

Thrill of season not just for shooters

Seeing the family tradition of duck shooting passed on to the next generation is always a thrill for Richard Hill.
Over many years, the Oamaru Sports and Outdoors co-owner has seen generations of North Otago families prepare for the duck-shooting season. Children who once came in to the store with their fathers were now coming in with their own children.
“It’s just awesome – it makes me feel old, though,” Hill said.
It was also encouraging to see more young women take up duck-shooting.
“We’re starting to see a lot of teenage girls getting into the sport now, which is absolutely fantastic.” ....

A massive $17 million fish screen project is underway for New Zealand s biggest irrigation scheme that starts in the Rangitata River.
Rangitata Diversion Race Management Ltd (RDRML) chief executive Tony McCormick said the project was in response to concerns from anglers and runanga about fish, particularly sports fish such as salmon, and native fish such as galaxiids, getting caught into the 67-kilometre long irrigation race which extends from an intake on the Rangitata River at Klondyke to a discharge at Highbank on the Rakaia River. ....
