Massive trout caught near Twizel officially breaks world record

According to the International Game Fish Association website the record is now held by Seumas Petrie.
Stuff has unsuccessfully attempted to contact Petrie.
Razza Bar and Bistro employee Sean Colenso said there was a spot in the bar for the fish, once it had been taxidermied, which he expected to be finished in about October.
”It’s great news it’s been officially recognised,’’ Colenso said.

ECan report on Canterbury hāpua raises questions

“The Rakaia and Rangitata hāpua provided substantial catches of smelt and yellow-eyed mullet, whereas the Hakatere hāpua was lacking mullet and flounder, and smelt counts were lower than those in the Rakaia and Rangitata hāpua,” the report says.
“Repeated surveys of the hāpua at various times of the year will provide a much clearer picture of current fish communities in each of the hāpua, especially of the large runs of smelt into the hāpua which historically occurred during December and January.”
The report noted greater numbers of yellow-eyed mullet compared to 1980. However, catches of this species varied greatly in the 2020 hāpua surveys; none were caught in the Ashburton/Hakatere Hāpua, whereas more than 1500 were caught in the Rangitata, including 1425 in one seine haul. ....

Central South Island Fish and Game says low lake levels a concern

Lake Opuha is operating at a fraction of its usual level.
“It’s usually around winter that we need the lake to fill up, and so far the weather just hasn’t provided it,” Webb said.
“Like everyone else, we want the lake to be full, but if we get a dry winter we’re really going to be in trouble.”
