Car show, Mexican fiesta, fundraisers, and supply drives make up your weekend

The weekend is here and there's plenty of ways to spend your weekend. Saturday is the 20th Annual Abingdon Road Knights Car Show starting at 8:00 am and running throughout the afternoon with money raised to benefit the Abingdon Food Pantry. Registration runs until noon with a $15 entry fee. If you decide to enter and bring a non-perishable item, you'll receive two dollars off the entry. A free t-shirt and dash plaque will be given to the first 100 entries. There will also be food available on the grounds and a 50/50 drawing with proceeds benefiting Hedding Grade School's lunch program. Saturday is also the Team Hope Walk to benefit those affected by Huntington's disease and their families. Team Hope is the Huntington's Disease Society of America's largest national grassroots fundraising event. The Team Hope Walk steps off from the Lake Storey Pavilion at 10:00 am and runs until 3:00 pm. St. Patrick's Catholic Church on South Academy Street is holding ....

Firefighters battle Wednesday fire at Academy Street apartment building

Firefighters in Galesburg battled and extinguished a fire in an apartment building on South Academy Street on Wednesday evening. According to a news release, firefighters from all three stations responded to 670 South Academy at around 5:21 where a multi-unit apartment building had light smoke coming from the roof. Battalion Chief Donald Brackett assumed command and the Central Station crew made entry, extinguishing a kitchen fire. An emergency callback was initiated to provide emergency fire coverage for the rest of the city. The fire was contained to the kitchen by suppression crews and determined to be unintentionally caused by cooking. Preliminary damage estimates are approximately $20,000. No injuries were reported. ....

But when Pam Meyers moved to Greenville from North Carolina in pursuit of her job at Motel 6, in light of escalating rent prices and credit barriers, the best living option for her granddaughters, ages 11 and 16, and herself was to take up residence at her workplace.
“Rent was ridiculous,” Meyers said. “One bedroom: $1,200. I was like, OK, I’ll stay at the hotel.”
Then she stumbled onto the Home Again Program, Greenville Housing Fund and United Housing Connection’s joint venture to help families with school-aged children living in Upstate hotels bridge the gap to self-sufficiency at a long-term rental home. Meyers sent all necessary documentation as fast as she could to her case manager, Barbara Hunter-Geer, who helped her secure a much more spacious townhome with the aid of Reedy Realty. ....
