THE back garden of another Winchester Edwardian home is set to be developed. Rutland House on Park Road is one of the last on the road to see a back-land development. Alfred Homes has proposed three detached houses on the back garden next to the Kings Barton development. Originally four houses were approved but Alfred Homes have altered the scheme which attracted opposition from the City of Winchester Trust and 13 households, citing overdevelopment, lack of open space and dangerous access. The trust objected because of a lack of information. Objector Mrs Hayley Burnley said the proposed homes were taller than previously, adding: to say the neighbours were consulted about this is untrue and disingenuous of Chris Rees to say otherwise.” ....
THERE have been 821 mayors of Winchester but the 822nd will be the first from Whiteley. Vivian Achwal s elevation to the senior role was ratified this evening at a full Council meeting in River Park Leisure Centre. Cllr Achwal has represented the Whiteley ward, now called Whiteley and Shedfield, since 2008. She married her husband Sudhakar, a chemical engineer, in 1980 and they lived in India and Saudi Arabia for some 16 years where she worked in teaching. They have a daughter. Returning to the UK in 1997 the Achwals moved to Whiteley and she got involved in community activities and worked as a teaching assistant at Whiteley Primary School and also for three years as the school lollipop lady. ....
PLANNING chiefs were split down the middle over a retrospective application for an outdoor kitchen. Josh Mathias has installed a pergola and pizza oven in his Walcote Place courtyard, just off the High Street. He claimed he did not realise it required planning permission. But his neighbours complained to the council and Mr Mathias was forced to submit an application. This was refused following lengthy debate at a city council planning committee on April 22. Chairman Therese Evans used her casting vote to break the deadlock, as four councillors (Russell Gordon-Smith, David McLean, Laurence Ruffell, Jane Rutter) voted to grant permission, and four voted against (Angela Clear, Therese Evans, Brian Laming and Mike Read). ....
