Des Moines County health official thanks volunteers for vaccine help

Des Moines County Public Health Administrator Christa Poggemiller said COVID-19 vaccination efforts have been hugely successful, largely thanks to coordination from local entities.
I want to thank all of the other agencies Great River Health System, Emergency Management and all of the volunteers, Poggemiller said.
Poggemiller told the Des Moines County Board of Supervisors at its Tuesday meeting that, as of Tuesday morning, 12,100 county residents had gotten at least one shot.
While Johnson & Johnson has gotten Food and Drug Administration approval for a single-shot vaccine, Poggemiller said it is unlikely the county will get it. Most of the vaccines Des Moines County has gotten have been from Pfizer, but Poggemiller said Moderna vaccines may be coming soon. ....

WILMINGTON A lifetime member of the Wilmington Regional Association of Realtors, Millard James “Jim” Fountain Jr., 87, passed away at 12:45 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 21, 2021.
He was the husband of the beautiful Pearl Winner Fountain, and their marriage celebration of 66 years would have been in April. He was the proud dad of Diane Fountain and the “Pops” of Dr. Meares Green, Scientist Chaz Green (married to Nicole Harrison Green), and Dr. Bliss (Elizabeth) Green Leverette (married to Matthew Leverette). Bliss was born being the “Joy of his world.” He was the grandfather of William Fugazy (Dr. Heather) and Alexandra Fugazy and the great-grandfather of Penelope Marie Fugazy and William Alfred Fugazy. He was preceded in death by his dearly loved and missed son, Ricky Fountain. ....

'Please come forward' | Newport News mother pleads for public's help in finding son's killer

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. Jefferson Avenue will forever be the street that changed Yvonne Carter s life.
On the night of Jan. 23, Newport News Police responded to reports of gunshots from the Southeast Community of the city. When officers arrived, they found 23-year-old Devon Carter had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene. 
Weeks later, Devon s killer is unknown, and so is the motive. Now, his mother is pleading with the public to come forward with answers.
“I was later showed a picture of him, and I identified my son. I could tell he had gunshot wounds to his head, and after that, I lost it, Yvonne said.  ....

While leading one of the state’s most important environmental organizations, Barbara J. Erickson looked back with reverence and ahead with anticipation.
“We are always passing the baton to the next generation,” she said at the Trustees of Reservations annual meeting in 2019.
Ms. Erickson, who was 42 when she died of cancer on Jan. 15, played a key role statewide among those who preserve the open space jewels of the past and unearth new gems for the future. ....

Three nonprofits get $17,500 in emergency relief grants

PLYMOUTH – It was a red-letter day for three local nonprofit organizations. They received a total of $17,500 in stabilization grants from the SouthCoast Emergency Response Fund because of financial need relating to COVID-19.
In this latest round of grants, Plymouth Guild received $2,500, Plymouth Task Force to End Homelessness $8,000 and Arc of Plymouth and Upper Cape Cod $5,000. The local nonprofits can use the funds to support operations of their organizations, which serve vulnerable populations, are dedicated to adaptability and innovation, and have demonstrated a commitment toward racially diverse leadership.
More than $600,000 in stabilization grants were awarded to 60 nonprofits in Southeastern Massachusetts. The SouthCoast Emergency Response Fund provides resources to organizations that work with people who are most vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus and most impacted by inequity. ....
