Canadian Tulip Festival kicks off as Ottawa remains under a stay-at-home order

OTTAWA The 69 th Canadian Tulip Festival is underway, and for the second straight year, the event will be held virtually due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Residents are asked to avoid seeing the tulips in-person unless they live in the area, but still, many are heading to parks to view the blooms across the capital region. The sun is shining, the weather is warm and thousands of tulips are in full bloom across Ottawa. On Friday, which marks the start of the Canadian Tulip Festival, many people took advantage of the picture-perfect day to snap a photo of the tulips at Commissioners Park, near Dow’s Lake.

Next Best Thing: The Big Screen, Gridiron, And Big Bugs

Next Best Thing | April 28, 2021 The Starlite Drive-In has been a great option for watching movies on the big screen this past year, and tomorrow is a special Art House at the Drive-In screening presented by mama.film and Wichita Jazz Festival. At 8:30 p.m., catch Mary Lou Williams: The Lady Who Swings The Band, profiling the jazz pianist, composer and innovator. The screening also includes a filmmaker Q&A with the film’s director, hosted by KMUW’s Carla Eckels. Details are at mama.film.   Like many annual events, the Society of Professional Journalists’ presentation of Gridiron took a hiatus last year, but it makes its triumphant return this Friday and Saturday. The original stage production stars local media professionals poking fun at the year’s news and newsmakers. Most importantly, it raises funds for journalism scholarships.

Presented by Uber Driver Stories New York will lose one House seat under a new census count falling just 89 people short of the number it would have needed to keep all 27 of its House members. On the one hand: 89 people! The tiny margin by which New York lost out to Minnesota prompted tons of hand-wringing. What if fewer rich people had fled New York as the pandemic bore down? What if the state had

Salem is a garden paradise in spring: 13 gardens you can visit this season

Salem is a garden paradise in spring: 13 gardens you can visit this season Today 7:30 AM Tulips bloom outside the Bush House at Bush s Pasture Park in Salem. Jamie Hale/The Oregonian Facebook Share Exploring the Salem area in spring feels a little like landing in Oz. The city comes alive with color in the springtime, as flowers pop up in public parks, formal gardens, and at nurseries and farms around the area. It’s enough to make Salem not only Oregon’s state capital, but the garden capital of Oregon as well. Expand your vision from Salem proper to include the nearby towns of Silverton, Monmouth, Brooks and Dallas, and you have a veritable Garden of Eden at the heart of the Willamette Valley. What is it about the area that’s so good for gardens?
