MME Seminar: Advanced Green Composites | WSU Insider | Washington State University

March 16, 2021
Thursday, March 18th, 11 a.m. to Noon
Presented by Dr. Anil N. Netravali, Jean and Douglas McLean Professor of Fiber Science, Department of Fiber Science and Apparel Design, Cornell University https://wsu.zoom.us/j/95414310072
Light weight fiber reinforced composites have replaced metals in many applications from automobile parts to satellites and from windmill blades to sporting goods. Most of these composites are made using fibers and resins that are derived from petroleum. Since they tend to be non-degradable, non-recyclable and non-reusable, most of them end up in landfills at the end of their life. Green composites made from plant-based fibers and resins on the other hand are fully sustainable and compostable. Since the beginning of the research on green composites that started only 25-30 years ago, a significant progress has been made. Natural fiber reinforced green composites now can be found in many applications from automobile parts to housing a ....

Entrepreneurship at the intersection of technology and design

March 4, 2021
A $30,000 grant from the non-profit organization VentureWell helped launch new class in the College of Human Ecology that gives senior design students the opportunity to develop and market their ideas.
The class – Fiber Science & Apparel Design Futures – is open to seniors in the departments of Fiber Science & Apparel Design and Design + Environmental Analysis. In it, students take a concept they developed in a previous design course and move it closer to the marketplace.
“How would it be made? What would it cost to produce? What would it’s end of life look like? These are the questions students are looking at,” said Margaret Frey, the course’s lead professor and the Vincent V.C. Woo Professor in the department of Fiber Science & Apparel Design. “The students are working in groups with a laundry list of deliverables to choose from. We’re asking them to think about the skills they want to be able to demonstrate to a prospective employer.” ....

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, a mecca for swim and beachwear, Malia Mills graduated from Cornell University where she was initially enrolled in Design & Environmental Awareness. After spending a semester at La Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne in Paris, she discovered that her passion was fashion, and more specifically, swimwear design. She finished her undergraduate degree with a major in the Department of Textiles & Apparel, known today as the Department of Fiber Science & Apparel Design (FSAD). In 1991, after working in San Francisco as an assistant designer for Jessica McClintock, Mills moved to New York City, where she soon founded her eponymous swimwear label. A waitress at the Odeon a tr ....
