Longford parkrun Event Director Kevin Kane has expressed disappointment and frustration that the government is ‘contradicting their own advice by not issuing a parkrun return date’.
The last Longford parkrun took place on March 7, 2020 and on average 100 people of all ages run or walk the 5km weekly event in the Mall.
Mr Kane remarked, “Both Micheál Martin and Leo Varadkar spoke about the theme of the summer being outdoor events, yet parkrun has been overlooked.”
He is thrilled for all those places being allowed to open up, yet is deeply frustrated that a wonderful outdoor health initiative like parkrun has been put on the back burner. “We have detailed reports carried out by epidemiologists stating the risk of transmission at outdoor sporting events is incredibly low risk.” ....

The planned refurbishment of the iconic 1865 building at St Mel’s College, Longford moved a step closer to becoming reality with Minister for Education Norma Foley TD indicating today that the project will proceed to design stage.
Minister Foley made the announcement during a virtual meeting that was also attended by St Mel’s College Principal Declan Rowley and Board of Management Chairperson Enda Flynn, along with Deputy Joe Flaherty and Senator Micheál Carrigy.
The project will include;

€800,000 to address underfunding at St Christopher’s Services in Longford

€800,000 in funding is to be allocated by the HSE to address historic underfunding at St Christopher’s Services in Longford.
The funding will finally address key elements at the Longford service which has long been underfunded.
Welcoming the news, and as a result of funding, Longford / Westmeath Fianna Fáil TD Joe Flaherty, expressed hope that St Christopher’s Services will now be in a position to engage with the unions and begin to address the issue of non-payment of increments.
Deputy Flaherty commented, “Since 2013 staff at St Christopher’s have not been paid their increments and the service has struggled to retain and recruit staff. Hopefully this additional funding announcement towards other areas of the Service is an opportunity for the service to address this historic failing. ....

Fianna Fáil TD for Longford Westmeath, Joe Flaherty has raised concerns about the inclusion of local pharmacists and pharmacy staff in the vaccine rollout.
The Longford TD stated that he understands there is an issue with the rollout of vaccines for pharmacy staff in the four counties of Longford, Westmeath, Laois and Offaly.
Deputy Flaherty commented, “It seems that pharmacists and pharmacy staff in many other health regions are now vaccinated, or the process is almost complete, but yet only a handful of those in the sector have been called locally.” ....
