SANTA BARBARA, Calif. The once-in-a-century COVID-19 pandemic caught everyone off guard. The United States was in the longest stretch of growth in its history and no one was expecting a pandemic to shut businesses down for months.
Salon Patine in Santa Barbara and Island Brewing Company in Carpinteria were planning on future growth heading into 2020. The pandemic hit both companies hard and both looked for ways to pay to keep as many of their employees as possible.
They filed out applications for federal and state loans and grants and both received two rounds of Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans. Owners of the businesses said if it weren t for that emergency funding, they’re not sure if their companies would have been able to survive.

Strawberries are a sign of summer, particularly in coastal Sussex County, and they’re the showcased ingredient at all 12 SoDel Concepts restaurants in May.
“There is nothing like a fresh, ripe strawberry,” said Doug Ruley, vice president of culinary operations for the Rehoboth Beach-based restaurant group. “We couldn’t think of a better way to kick off the beach season than with local products from our friends at Magee Farms, Evans Farms and Fifer Orchards.”
