In the corruption update in August last year, I wrote: ‘One must distinguish between what the state is doing and what the ANC is doing or not doing. President Ramaphosa has clearly put the state on a new trajectory. It is important that the ANC now follows suit.’ Nine months later, in the past week, this is exactly what happened. 
 
Ace Magashule was suspended pending the outcome of his corruption court case in the Free State and removed from a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. Former minister Bongani Bongo was also expelled from the NEC due to his corruption charges. Magashule dominated the news. He may not have been the most corrupt person around, but he is the highest-ranking ANC official to be charged so far and, sadly for him, he has become the symbol of corruption in the ANC, together with Jacob Zuma. ....

ANC deputy secretary general Jessie Duarte said some leaders of the Radical Economic Transformation faction in the party had made statements which were an “assault” on the party leadership’s attempts to hold the party together.
The ANC is “hopeful” that secretary general Ace Magashule currently on temporary suspension will apologise to the party and the rest of the country as instructed by its national executive committee (NEC).
Party deputy secretary general Jessie Duarte addressing the first media briefing since Magashule was suspended said there was a need for a “retraction” of the letter he issued last week suspending President Cyril Ramaphosa as the president. ....

The shenanigans that have convulsed the ANC after the suspension of the party’s secretary-general, Ace Magashule, have many South Africans worrying the country will be plunged into instability. The anxiety was worsened when several voice notes were shared on social media, with supporters of former president Jacob Zuma being called to assemble in Nkandla, allegedly to “protect” him from imminent arrest.
Rest your minds. Nothing of the sort will happen. These hysterical actions by the Radical Economic Transformation (RET) faction of the ANC and the stars of the state capture project are what many of us predicted would happen as the days of their reckoning finally arrive. ....
