(File photo) A car caught fire at a busy intersection in Palmerston North. Emergency services rushed to the intersection of Tremaine Ave and Rangitīkei St following reports of sparks and smoke coming from underneath a car just after 3.40pm. When they arrived one person was out of the car and one lane was blocked, a police media spokeswoman said. The car had caught fire, but was extinguished before firefighters arrived, Fire and Emergency spokeswoman Karen McDonald said. ....

A child has been rushed to hospital in Palmerston North after they were hit by a car on a busy commuter route. The child suffered moderate injuries after they were struck on Tremaine Ave about 4.55pm on Thursday, a police spokeswoman said. The incident happened near the entrance to the Red Sox Manawatū sports club. Also on Thursday, about 5pm, two cars collided at the intersection of Gillespies Line and Kairanga Bunnythorpe Rd. There were no reports of injuries, but one car ended up in a ditch. ....

A man who allegedly drove a stolen car into a petrol station faces a string of charges related to the incident. Damian Ian Ranginui, 30 entered no pleas when he appeared in the Palmerston North District Court on Monday afternoon. He faces various charges related to his alleged involvement in a car chase in Palmerston North on Sunday. Police said they were responding to a report of a family harm incident on Russell St that morning, during which time a vehicle left the address and later crashed into a petrol pump at Waitomo on Tremaine Ave. ....

A Palmerston North congregation was shocked when their Sunday sermon was interrupted by a car crashing into the petrol station next door, which burst into flames. Emergency services were called to the corner of Tremaine Ave and Roy St, after a light grey sedan crashed into a fuel pump at Waitomo Fuel at 10.47am. Two fire crews were at the scene, but the fire was out on arrival. The Palmerston North Presbyterian New Church was celebrating its second anniversary, with a special Sunday service at Lynchway Funeral Directors’ chapel on Roy St when the car crashed. ....

Parts of a main road in Palmerston North were closed after contractors struck a gas main. The gas main was struck on Tremaine Ave at 12.10pm on Tuesday, a police spokeswoman said. The road reopened just before 2pm. Officers attended the scene, managing traffic at the intersections of Milson Line and Thames St with Tremaine Ave. A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said they had one fire truck in attendance but no additional information. A post on the Palmerston North City Council Facebook page at 1pm said the road could be closed for two to three hours. ....
