Army major, 47, 'defrauded MoD out of £40,000 to pay boarding school fees', court martial hears

An Army Major who was awarded an MBE for his charity work defrauded the military out of nearly £40,000 to send his children to one of the country s most expensive boarding schools, a court heard today.
Royal Engineer Lloyd Hamilton allegedly misused taxpayers money to pay for their education while he was stationed abroad.
A court martial heard the 47-year-old father of two, who was based in Cyprus at the time, was only eligible to claim the allowances as long as his wife Liz was living with him.
But following a breakdown in their marriage Mrs Hamilton, an IBM manager, remained at their private £500,000 four bedroom home in Hamble, Hampshire. ....

Scottish budget: Borders Tories criticise spending plans

Scottish finance minister Kate Forbes delivered the spending plans in the Scottish Parliament on Thursday (January 28).
But Borders MP John Lamont and MSP Rachael Hamilton – both Conservatives – believe that the draft budget does not do enough to protect businesses and jobs.
Mrs Hamilton said: The budget does little in addressing the issues at hand as a result of COVID, and it doesn’t go nearly far enough.

Obituary: Mrs. Florence Graham

Her family also has been paying tribute to her for her energetic, hardworking and inspiring life.
Florence, who passed away on November 18, was born in 1928 in the townland of Kilcoo, near Garrison. She was the seventh of a family of eight children born to Lucinda and Willie John Carson. She grew up on the family farm, helping with all the tasks of farm and home upkeep.
Florence went to Knocknashangan School and had high regard for her teacher, Mrs Hamilton who very capably taught the mixed age children all in one schoolroom. Florence often fondly recounted many episodes of fun and innocent mischief at school and throughout childhood. ....

Rachael Hamilton criticises rival over Alex Salmond votes

In response to Mrs Hamilton’s criticism, Mr Wheelhouse, a South of Scotland list member, told the
Border Telegraph: “I fully support the work of the inquiry and its convener.
“However, as a Scottish minister [for energy, connectivity and the islands], I am bound to adhere to the Ministerial Code, which includes strict limits on publication of legal advice to ministers.
“This is a similar position that Tory UK ministers would have to take in a similar scenario, and Ms Hamilton knows this.”
In the votes on November 4 and 25, the SNP was the only party which did not support the release of legal advice. ....
