Daphne Caine to stand for re-election Mon, 10 May 2021 Daphne Caine has declared her intention to stand for re-election in Garff. Maughold resident Mrs Caine, who has represented the constituency since 2016, said her priorities are education, the environment and island infrastructure, especially roads and flood mitigation. Mrs Caine confirmed she will stand again as an independent candidate. She said: ‘I was late to declare five years ago and I hope by announcing early that I will have more time to get around the whole constituency and hear directly from people what their priorities and concerns are. ‘I have worked constantly on a wide variety of constituency issues both before and during the pandemic, and I’m aware many face uncertain times as we come out of the health crisis. ....
Peter Karran Printed and digital download photos available There are no plans to return to state-run pre-school provision in the island, Education Minister Alex Allinson says. Teacher-led pre-school provision, funded by the government and provided at 11 primary schools, was scrapped in 2012 by the then Education Minister Peter Karran, leaving parents to find places only in the private sector. A voucher system was introduced to help with the costs. In 2018, Dr Allinson’s predecessor Graham Cregeen told a select committee that the changes made under Mr Karran were ’rushed and ill-thought-out’. But, in Tynwald last week, Dr Allinson said: ’Regarding going back to the situation beforehand, where pre-school care was provided by the state sector through our existing schools, there is no current plan to revert back to that, particularly given the fact that in the intervening years we have had the development of a private sector on the island.’ ....

The government wants to create a fully engineered new site for construction waste at Turkeyland in Malew - and it had hoped to also use that site as an interim facility - but no detailed plans have been submitted. But Infrastructure Minister Tim Baker confirmed in the House of Keys on Friday that Wright’s Pit North in Bride would have to remain open into next year - possibly for a further 18 months. ....
