Texas reverses ban on religious advisers in execution chamber By (0) April 22 (UPI) Texas announced Thursday that it s reversed its ban on spiritual advisers entering the state s execution chambers. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice issued a revised policy allowing death row inmates to designate a TDCJ chaplain or other spiritual adviser of their choosing to be present inside the death chamber after they receive notification of their execution date. Advertisement The reversal comes two years after the state banned any chaplain from entering the execution chamber amid a legal fight with Patrick Murphy, who sought to have a Buddhist spiritual adviser with him. The U.S. Supreme Court stayed his scheduled 2019 execution on the grounds of religious discrimination after the TDCJ denied his request. ....

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s decision to not allow clergy in the death chamber was criticized by death penalty opponents as well as religious leaders and advocates of religious freedom. TDCJ announces COVID-linked death of Lubbock Montford Unit officer A-J Media The Texas Department of Criminal Justice this week announced it is grieving the death of an employee of the Lubbock-based Montford Unit, which is being linked to COVID-19. Correctional Officer V Joe Landin, 54, had 25 years of service with TDCJ and was assigned to the Montford Unit, according to a news release from the TDCJ. He tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted to a Lubbock hospital on Dec. 14. Officer Landin spent several days in an intensive care unit before he died Monday. Officer Landin leaves behind two sons, two daughters and seven grandchildren. ....

Plainview TDCJ officer dies from COVID-19 A 58-year-old correctional officer in Plainview died Sunday -2 days after he was hospitalized for COVID-19, officials said. Phillip Holbert, a correctional officer at the Formby State Jail, served with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for 24 years, 14 of which he served as a correctional officer, according to a TDCJ news release. “Phillip Holbert was a prime example of a TDCJ career officer who came to the agency in the spirit of service,” said TDCJ Executive Director Bryan Collier. “TDCJ is a family and the thoughts and prayers of our family are with his family and friends now.
