There was no one specific need for the Maine Nordiques during the North American Hockey League’s Entry Draft on Wednesday, with the Nordiques instead selecting four defensemen, two forwards and a goaltender.
The team only made seven picks in the 20-round draft, with 23 players already on the organization’s 30-man protected list prior to the draft.
“We tried to add to our depth, acquire talent, we made picks for different reasons,” Maine Nordiques coach Nolan Howe said. “Whether it’s impact (players), whether it’s guys we want to see progress through the (Maine Nordiques) Academy. We utilized the draft in many different ways, depending on the situation.”
REGINA As Canada takes on Russia in the IIHF U18 Men’s World Hockey Championships Thursday night, one member from Saskatchewan isn’t suiting up. Regina’s Cole Sillinger made Team Canada’s roster, which was announced in April. However, a positive COVID-19 test derailed his opportunity to play with the team. “It’s really devastating not being able to play in the tournament,” Sillinger said. During his pre-tournament quarantine, Sillinger needed to provide three consecutive negative COVID-19 tests before being allowed to train ahead of the tournament in Texas. LINCOLN, NE (KELO.com) The Sioux Falls Stampede defeated the Lincoln Stars 10 to four Friday night at the Ice Box. Seven different players tallied goals for the Herd, while Cole Sillinger tallied his first career USHL hat trick in the contest. Christian Stoever made the start in net, stopping 30 of 34 shots on net.
The first game of a three-game, road trip weekend could not have started any worse as the Lincoln Stars opened with two quick goals in the first seven minutes of the period. After James Stefan and Jake Beaune tallied goals for the Stars, Stampede Head Coach Marty Murray called a timeout. Thirty seconds later Cole Sillinger scored his fifth goal in six games for the Herd to get within one. Luke Toporowski provided the assist on the play.
