ISHPEMING, MI – James O. Haines, age 76, of Ishpeming Twp., passed peacefully on January 15, 2021, in the burn trauma unit, in Ann Arbor, Mi.
Jim was born in Saginaw and later moved to Benton Harbor where he graduated from high school and attended Lake Michigan College. Jim and his wife began building their home in Ishpeming Township in 1990 and settled there in 1996. Jim was a member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 7, retiring in 2009.
Jim enjoyed his life: building his house and shop, rebuilding machinery, living in the woods, having beers with friends, and the monthly trips to Big Bay for Folk Jam Night. ....

Big Fresno Fair announces new board members

These appointments were made on Sept. 30, 2020 by California Governor Gavin Newsom. The Fair also announces the new officer positions for 2021: Jerry Pacheco, Board President; Charles Riojas, Vice President; and Terry Gonsalves, Secretary/Treasurer.
“We are excited to have our new Fair Board members involved in the conversations about the future for our Fair, our operations and new ways to look at how we approach things amid the challenges of COVID-19,” said Stacy Rianda, Deputy Manager II of The Big Fresno Fair. “Each new Board member brings a new network with new opportunities and a fresh perspective to the Fair. With these Board additions and our new officers, we look forward to the future and the continued operations of our Fairgrounds and Fair in a safe and healthy way for our community to enjoy.” ....

Worcester-Fitchburg Building Trades Council elects Jorge Rivera as new president
Jorge Rivera has been elected president of the Worcester-Fitchburg Building Trades Council, the group announced Monday.
Rivera, a 20-year union member and painter, trained apprentices across the region, teaching bilingual classes on OSHA safety, first aid, and CPR. He concurrently serves as the director of organizing for the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades DC 35 in Boston.  
It s a privilege to represent the Worcester-Fitchburg Building Trades Council as president,  Rivera said.  I’m proud to come together with my sisters and brothers to fight for a better way of life for working people. Together, we can continue to advocate on key issues like wage theft, stand up for community standards, and create partnerships for a brighter future across our region. ....

Labor’s Community Service Agency’s (LCSA) annual Presents From Partners “Labor of Love” holiday program took on a whole new look this year due to the coronavirus. For the past two decades, children and their families facing tough times have gathered at Sheet Metal Workers Local 16’s headquarters in Northeast Portland for a holiday treat. They enjoyed a union-catered lunch and visited with Santa Claus before being led into rooms filled with toys, bikes, stuffed animals, clothes and presents for their parents. They could choose what they wanted.
This year, because of COVID-19 crowd restrictions ordered by the governor, the party had to be canceled. But as LCSA Executive Director Eryn Byram said: “Hey COVID, you ain’t got nothing on organized labor. We are ready to roll!” ....
