Worcester-Fitchburg Building Trades Council elects Jorge Rivera as new president
Jorge Rivera has been elected president of the Worcester-Fitchburg Building Trades Council, the group announced Monday.
Rivera, a 20-year union member and painter, trained apprentices across the region, teaching bilingual classes on OSHA safety, first aid, and CPR. He concurrently serves as the director of organizing for the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades DC 35 in Boston.  
It s a privilege to represent the Worcester-Fitchburg Building Trades Council as president,  Rivera said.  I’m proud to come together with my sisters and brothers to fight for a better way of life for working people. Together, we can continue to advocate on key issues like wage theft, stand up for community standards, and create partnerships for a brighter future across our region. ....

250 million years ago, many tuataras roamed the world. Now, only one species remains. In fact, the modern tuatara,
Sphenodon punctatus, is the only surviving family member of its taxonomic order,
Rhynchocephalia.
Today, a new paper in
Communications Biology suggests there is something even more remarkable about this little survivor. Scientists have now found that the species may have two mitochondrial genomes, making it unlike any other vertebrate in the world.
All animals have nuclear DNA found in the cell’s nucleus and mitochondrial DNA, located in the so-called cellular “powerhouse,” the mitochondria. By examining both types of genomes, scientists are building pictures of countless species evolu ....

With each day the threat from the spill may only be increasing for wildlife in the gulf. we ve been showing you the toll this disaster has been taking on animals here, including pelicans covered in oil. dozens of brown pelicans who were rescued and treated were released. rob marciano was there when it happened. exciting day, isn t it? largest release to date of pelicans that have been taken in as a result of oiling from the oil spill and we re going to release up to 40. wildlife vet dan mulcahy leads a carefully selective team that gets these birds from rescue centers back out into the wild. it is all about the animals. that s our goal. these animals spent the last few weeks being nursed back to health. now they re on a coast guard plane getting a second chance. i m pretty excited about this ....
