The changes take effect July 1, and officials hope they streamline the way they support their schools.
âI believe that the reassignments are going to [position] us now that weâre going to be back [teaching] face-to-face,â said board Chairman David Richardson. âAs we embark on our mantra of a new day, [that] new leadership and those reassignments are just kind of making sure everyoneâs on the right seat on the bus.
First, the board named Stan Winborne, now the assistant superintendent for operations and human resources, to the position of associate superintendent of curriculum, instruction and student services.
Winborne has served nearly 25 years with the district, and as head of curriculum and instruction will replace Michael Myrick, whoâs leaving to become superintendent of the Weldon City Schools.
OXFORD â Granville County School board members voted Tuesday to expand their discussion of potential school mergers to include the possibility of converting Tar River Elementary School into a replacement for G.C. Hawley Middle School.
The decision came after Superintendent Alisa McLeanâs staff briefed the board on merger scenarios that consolidate Granville Central and South Granville high schools, using whichever of those campuses becomes surplus as the new home of Hawley Middle School.
The possibility of consolidating high schools answers pressure in favor of the idea from the Granville County Commissioners, but Tuesdayâs school board debate indicated that three and perhaps a majority of its members are reluctant or outright opposed.
OXFORD â Granville County Public Schools officials formally recognized Courtney Currin as their Principal of the Year during a school board meeting on May 3.
The principal at Tar River Elementary School, Currin said the award is a testament to all of the hard work she, her staff and students have put in over the past year.
âIâm very humbled, honored and still kind of in a state of shock,â Currin said. âI canât put into words how much this means to me because it does mean a lot.â
A graduate of the N.C. Teaching Fellows Program at Meredith College in 2004, Currin began working in the GCPS system as an English teacher at J.F. Webb High School, earning National Board certification during her eight years at the school.
