Solidarity with First Nations peoples and taking a stand against the racism of Australia Day was high on their agenda.
The protest organisers Justice for David Dungay, Fighting In Solidarity Towards Treaties (FISTT), Indigenous Social Justice Association, Gamilaraay Next Generation, National Union of Students Anti-Racist Department and the Australian Student Environment Network had repeatedly asked to meet police to discuss the COVID-19 safety and other plans. They were ignored.
As the crowd poured into Djabargalli on an extremely hot day, the police changed tack after having earlier declared the protest was “unauthorised”. The police and government media barrage in the lead-up to the protest would have kept many others away. ....

As a Black woman in this country, it is hard to demand that my Black life should matter when for 233 years it never has.
Protesting Australia Day is an anti-colonial movement, a movement that calls for our country to exist independently, with treaties acknowledging the Sovereignty of First Nations peoples; and completely separate from the British Empire. We cannot continue to overlook the gruesome invasion by the British Empire and the disregard for Black life throughout its illegal occupation to date.
2021 marks 30 years since the Royal Commission into Black Deaths in Custody; and statistics tell us that over 440 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have died at the hands of police or corrections since 1991 - yet not one conviction. ....

When will leaders lead and stop Black deaths in custody?

I pay deep respect to the grieving families of those whose lives were unjustly cut short. In NSW, they include TJ Hickey, David Dungay, Rebecca Maher, Tane Chatfield, Eric Whittaker and Veronica Baxter.
Every day that has passed since the death in custody of my son, I have felt anguish and pain and a sense of injustice.
I have tried to make sense of the senseless loss of my son, and have struggled to have faith or any confidence in the subsequent, still ongoing, coronial and judicial oversight of his violent death.
I am determined to find people of goodwill and a measure of compassion who will listen to my story. My desire to bring about positive systemic changes to criminal justice systems grows with the passing days. ....
