Australian child protection services took him away as soon as he was born, according to Tracey Hanshaw, from Indigenous rights advocacy group Justice Aunties.
He was the third child Maher lost to officials, who intervened as she fought a drug addiction that started in her teens and ended with her death in a police cell at the age of 36. Although Rebecca s children were not living with her at the time of her death, it is clear to me that she was always a part of their lives and loved them very much, said the coroner s report.
In March, four Aboriginal people died in custody.

On March 2, a 35-year-old Aboriginal man died at the Longbay Correctional Centre prison hospital in Sydney. Three days later, a 44-year-old Indigenous woman died at Silverwater Correctional Facility. Another two days went by and, on March 7, another man died in Ravenhall Correctional Centre in Melbourne. The following week, a 37-year-old Barkindji man died after being pursued by police in Broken Hill it was March 18.
That’s four Aboriginal deaths in one month.

ALMOST 200 organ transplants were carried out in Ireland in 2020, the HSE has confirmed.
As of 28 December, 190 transplants were performed here this year, down from 274 transplants in 2019.
The majority of this year’s operations – 123 – were kidney transplants.
Ninety donors were involved in the process – 62 people who had died and 28 living donors.
Speaking about the figures, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly said organ donation is “among the most selfless gifts we can give another”.
I pay deep respect to the grieving families of those whose lives were unjustly cut short. In NSW, they include TJ Hickey, David Dungay, Rebecca Maher, Tane Chatfield, Eric Whittaker and Veronica Baxter.
Every day that has passed since the death in custody of my son, I have felt anguish and pain and a sense of injustice.
