Coast Guard, Air Force crews help rescue five missing mariners in Micronesia

U.S. Air Force and Coast Guard aircraft joined a merchant ship Friday to rescue five mariners in Micronesia whose boat had been missing for three days after running out of gas.
The mariners, on a fishing trip aboard a 23-foot skiff, were rescued in the vicinity of Houk Island, Chuuk, one of four states of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Coast Guard said in a news release Saturday.
The Coast Guard in Guam was notified Thursday evening of the missing fishing crew by someone in Oregon, a Coast Guard spokesman, Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew West, told Stars and Stripes on Monday. ....

The U.S. Coast Guard says it has suspended the active search for the missing mariner from the fishing vessel Miyamaru No. 18, Thursday.
The mariner, a Indonesia native, remains missing.
“Working with the Navy, Australian Defense Forces, an Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System vessel, and good Samaritans aboard 15 fishing vessels, our crews conducted a total of 15 searches, over the course of 42 hours, covering over 6,553 square miles,” said Lt. Cmdr. Victoria Saxon, a search and rescue mission coordinator at Joint Rescue Sub-Center Guam. “While it is not an easy decision, we have suspended the active search pending any further new information.” ....

The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended the active search for 10 missing crewmembers from a Taiwanese fishing vessel off of Midway Island in the Pacific Ocean.
Rescue crews from the Coast Guard, Navy, and good Samaritans aboard four fishing vessels and five Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System (AMVER) vessels participated in the search, conducting 34 searches over 80 hours and covering over 44,000 square miles.
The search was launched after the Rescue Coordination Center Taipei had lost contact withe FV Yong-Yu-Sing No.18 on December 31, 2020., The vessel last reported to be about 550-miles northeast of Midway Island. A U.S. Coast Guard HC-130 aircrew was able to locate the adrift Yong-Yu-Sing No. 18 on January 1, confirming that a life raft was missing and no sign of the 10 crew members. ....

A search involving U.S. Coast Guard, Navy and good samaritan vessels is continuing for 10 missing crew members of from an abandoned Taiwanese fishing vessel approximately 550 miles off the coast of Midway Island.
The search has been underway since December 31, 2020, after Rescue Coordination Center Taipei lost contact with 95-foot F/V Yong-Yu-Sing No. 18. An Air Station Barbers Point HC-130 aircrew later located the adrift Yong-Yu-Sing No. 18, Jan. 1, with a missing life raft and no signs of the 10 crewmembers.
An analysis of imagery has revealed there is damage to the ship and one of the vessel’s life rafts was missing, leaving searchers to believe that crew may have abandoned ship. ....
