Coast Guard, Air Force crews help rescue five missing mariners in Micronesia

U.S. Air Force and Coast Guard aircraft joined a merchant ship Friday to rescue five mariners in Micronesia whose boat had been missing for three days after running out of gas.
The mariners, on a fishing trip aboard a 23-foot skiff, were rescued in the vicinity of Houk Island, Chuuk, one of four states of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Coast Guard said in a news release Saturday.
The Coast Guard in Guam was notified Thursday evening of the missing fishing crew by someone in Oregon, a Coast Guard spokesman, Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew West, told Stars and Stripes on Monday. ....

Coast Guard, Air Force and Federated States of Micronesia responders rescued five mariners near Chuuk Friday, according to a Coast Guard press release. 
The crew of the merchant vessel Hoegh Brasilia rescued the mariners, missing since Tuesday, and transported them to the vicinity of Houk Island, where the Coast Guard Cutter Myrtle Hazard escorted them back to the island.
“Through coordination with multiple response agencies, we were able to save five members of our community and bring them back home to their families,” said Cmdr. Kristen Hahn, search and rescue mission coordinator for Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu. “The mariners having a float plan and communicating that plan with their family directly contributed to their rescue.” ....
