No compensation for abuse victim's wrongful conviction - minister


On appeal, two higher courts found there was ample evidence of abuse, including a letter from her husband where he admits to hurting her for his own satisfaction.
The High Court reduced her sentence to nine months in 2019 - but by then Mrs P had already served her year’s punishment.
In 2020, the Court of Appeal quashed the conviction, saying there were a raft of concerns in the case and that the court was “uneasy” about the way the District Court judge had reached his conclusions.
It was also critical of police, for failing to provide the original document; and the Crown, for what it called “bullying” cross-examination. ....

HOUSTON – James Harris knew he would have to wait a few months, possibly six, but now 11 months have gone by since Texas’ top criminal court first agreed to hear Harris’ plea for freedom.
“I really didn’t want to think that, but deep inside I had a feeling I was gonna get put on hold, just get tossed around,” Harris said.
Harris is awaiting his case to be heard before Texas’ Criminal Court of Appeals, which agreed on last May to do so. 
Harris wants to be exonerated after being sentenced to 25 years in prison for a crime he’s long maintained he did not commit.  Yet, his case remains pending 11 months later, leaving Harris, a father and grandfather, home on parole just waiting. ....

Four-time Golden Gloves boxing champion Ray Gray, the Detroit man who’s spent nearly 50 years behind bars for a murder he and his longtime supporters insist he did not commit, is hopeful that he could soon be released from a Michigan state prison.
For nearly five decades, Gray, 69, has maintained his innocence in the 1973 shooting death of 23-year-old Army veteran Reuben Bryant in a Euclid Street apartment on the city’s west side. ....

Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins notified the Superior Court Wednesday that she supports a motion for a new trial filed by lawyers for Sean Ellis challenging a firearms conviction linked to the 1993 murder of a police detective. If the motion is granted, Rollins said she intends to request the charges be dropped, wiping out the last case against Ellis, who spent more than 22 years behind bars for the murder before his conviction was overturned in 2015. ....
