2022 race could prove complicated for Ohio Democrats
At least two justices on the Ohio Supreme Court are eyeing the chief justice position and plan to campaign for the top judicial seat in 2022.
Democrat Jennifer Brunner and Republican Patrick DeWine are planning to run for chief justice next year. These two, and potentially another Republican on the court, want to replace the sitting Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor.
O’Connor, a Republican, is barred from running for another term. Ohio’s age limitation law restricts judges from campaigning for reelection after turning 70 years old.
This age limit rule may play a factor in the upcoming chief justice election. Complicating things further is the overall judicial landscape in Ohio that could hurt Democrats’ standing on the court even if Brunner or another Democrat wins the top spot. ....

Courting the voters: Ohio Supreme Court Justice Jennifer Brunner, a Democrat, announced Tuesday she’s running for chief justice adding intrigue to next year’s race to succeed Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor. Laura Hancock examines the role of the chief justice and what Brunner says she’ll do if elected to the position.
Money order: The Ohio Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday evening advanced the state budget bill with an “omnibus” amendment containing dozes of changes, Hancock reports, including restrictions on sex education and abortion clinics. Hancock also detailed in a separate report how the state will have to be cautious about not running afoul of U.S. Treasury rules for tax cuts in states accepting stimulus payments. ....

Divided Ohio Supreme Court kicks out groups' suit on 'bump stocks'

Divided Ohio Supreme Court kicks out groups suit on bump stocks
A divided Ohio Supreme Court dismissed a challenge to a Columbus city ordinance banning bump stocks, spring-loaded gadgets that can turn rifles into rapid-fire assault weapons, ruling that two Ohio gun-rights groups had no standing to sue the city.
The 4-3 decision released Friday morning found that Ohioans for Concealed Carry and Buckeye Firearms Foundation had suffered no harm in a case the justices heard despite that the Columbus City Council had repealed its ordinance a year ago, telling the court that made the case moot.
The city s repeal of the ban came just weeks after the Supreme Court, also on a 4-3 decision, agreed to hear the case late last year. ....
