Tax Exemption

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio Supreme Court
upheld a property tax exemption for Ohio State University’s airport, also known as Don Scott Field, finding that “airport use itself qualifies as an exempt ‘public purpose’” and hangars and offices leased for private use do not need to be “split-listed” as taxable.  ....

Ohio State University airport land will move to Columbus City Schools

On Tuesday, Columbus Board of Education members agreed to let the transfer of more than 800 acres
go forward with a 6-0 vote. That process will now formally begin. Board member Michael Cole was absent from the meeting.
The board s deadline to make a decision was June 1. The other option was for Dublin to make a one-time payment of $1.15 million to Columbus by June 30.
Having the land in our district long term, we believe, will benefit the district . well past any agreement of cash at this point, Columbus City Schools Treasurer Stan Bahorek told school board members Tuesday evening.
The deal between the two districts dates back to 2016, when central Ohio s suburban districts were most recently revisiting their Win-Win agreements with Columbus City Schools. Every six years, districts revisit the agreement, which has been in place since 1986. Its intention was to halt a potential turf war as the city of Columbus rapidly expanded, annexing neighboring land. ....

Opinion: Tuskegee Airmen left a lasting legacy

Ohio Tuskegee Airmen Day will be commemorated for the first time March 29.
The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American fighter pilots to serve in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Overcoming the great barriers of segregation and discrimination, they became one of the best fighting groups in the history of World War II.
Many years ago, my wife and I had the privilege of befriending a Tuskegee Airman, Major Herndon “Don” Cummings. Major Cummings was exceptional in personality and ability to weave engrossing recounts of his experiences during the war. We met Major Cummings when we joined a team to help with the maintenance and refurbishment of his home with a program known as Rebuilding Together. Throughout the day while we were painting, we learned about the Tuskegee Airmen. ....

Should Ohio State have to pay property taxes on its airport? State's high court to decide

The state s high court is considering whether the Ohio State University Airport should continue to be exempt from property taxes, given the changing nature of operations at the Northwest Side facility.
A Worthington man filed suit to force OSU to pay taxes on parts of the property not directly dedicated to student learning, rather than legally forgoing those payments as it has for decades. OSU counters that the airport is an integral part of more than two dozen degree programs and research and other educational activities and meets state law requirements for the exemption.
Justices heard oral arguments in the case Wednesday; a final decision is expected in coming months. ....
