Wilmington citizens review board 'in the hands of the legislature' a year after Floyd

WILMINGTON ââ A year from the death of George Floyd, the development of a citizens review board to oversee police actions and check for potential misconduct is making slow progress.
Community members have demanded the city form a police oversight committee for years, since 2013 when Brandon Smith was killed in a controversial police-involved shooting in Castle Hayne. The murder of Floyd last Memorial Day reinvigorated the public outcry for the issue.
Citizen review boards are set up to hear appeals of complaints against law enforcement officers which otherwise would only be investigated by the department itself. At least five other North Carolina metropolitan cities have such committees. ....

Wilmington-area police agencies work to restore trust with community

Local law enforcement agencies are working to restore any broken trust with the communities they serve, especially in light of recent police brutality cases that have made local and national headlines.
New Hanover County Sheriff s Office Public Information Officer Lt. Jerry Brewer said building relationships with the community starts on the first day a deputy steps into a uniform, not just following a tragic event.
The most recent tense event between law enforcement and the community was the death of Andrew Brown Jr., who was shot five times in Elizabeth City by Pasquotank County Sheriff s Office deputies while they were serving an arrest warrant. Brown s death has sparked protests and calls for accountability by activists. ....

LINC envisions solution to youth violence at vacant Wilmington fire station

The Wilmington City Council will review plans for how to use the vacant fire station on Princess Place Drive. City staff is proposing the site be used for affordable housing. LINC is asking to lease the building for a boarding school to help young, at-risk men.
WILMINGTON –– After seeing an uptick in youth violence on Wilmington streets over the past year, a local nonprofit is proposing solutions it hopes will set misled teenagers on the right path.
Leading Into New Communities (LINC) recently restated its interest in leasing the vacant fire station at 3933 Princess Place Dr. from the city. For $1 annually, the organization would house a boarding school at the site with cohorts of 10 to 12 young men, between the ages of 16 and 19. Residents would sleep in the fire station at night and work during the day toward obtaining their GED and acquiring vocational and technology skills. ....

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The community continues to try and understand the mass shooting that took place early Saturday morning that injured four and left three dead.
As of right now there is no word on a motive or any suspects in the shooting.
The Wilmington Police Department released a statement that said detectives are working âaround the clockâ in their investigation. Police added that because of the number of victims, this case âwill take time and a significant amount of manpower to conduct a thorough investigation and bring justice to the victims and their families.â ....
