Speeding, parking permits discussed | News, Sports, Jobs

WEIRTON Speeding issues and residential parking permits were the focus before the city’s Traffic Commission Thursday.
Commissioners continued a discussion, tabled from their March meeting, concerning speeding and public safety concerns along a portion of Marland Heights Road.
The commission was asked to look into the issue at the request of a resident at 325 Marland Heights Road.
Police Chief Charlie Kush said he had reviewed records and found reports of two incidents in recent years where a vehicle went into the property in question.
“Snow was part of one and the other was a DUI,” Kush said. ....

Weirton looking at fleet improvements for police, public works departments | News, Sports, Jobs

WEIRTON The city’s Finance Committee convened Wednesday, recommending the purchase of several vehicles for Weirton’s Police and Public Works departments.
The resolutions for the purchases will go before the full Weirton Council for consideration Monday.
One of the purchases was proposed in place a previously approved purchase.
In March, council had approved the purchase of a Dodge Ram 2500 4×4 crew cab for the Street Department.
Public Works Director Rod Ronsick, explained, however, there was an issue when he went to place the order through the vendor.
“They’re no longer taking orders for Dodge Rams,” Rosnick said. ....

Craig Howell - Lt. Scott Cook was sworn in by Mayor Harold Miller as the new deputy chief of the Weirton Police Department during a Tuesday ceremony at the Millsop Community Center.
WEIRTON The Weirton Police Department has a new deputy chief, following a ceremony held Tuesday.
Standing before a group of family, friends and fellow officers, Lt. Scott Cook received the oath of office in the Weirton Room of the Millsop Community Center, officially becoming second-in-command of the city’s finest.
“Today, we’re here to honor a special guy,” Mayor Harold Miller said in welcoming those in attendance. ....

Weirton may get license plate readers | News, Sports, Jobs


WEIRTON The Weirton Police Department could soon add a new tool to its arsenal.
During its meeting Wednesday, the city’s Finance Committee recommended authorizing the acceptance of a grant from the state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management for the purchase of license plate readers for use by the police department. The grant would be for $40,000, with a $20,000 match by the city.
The resolution will go before the full Weirton Council during its meeting Monday.
Police Chief Charlie Kush explained current plans are to outfit three city cruisers with the license plate readers, which will provide a scan of motor vehicles’ license plates. ....
