It is hard to watch the Albany Police Department’s forcible removal of an encampment of protesters and not think there was a better way.
Surely there must be a better way to respond to grievances over the use of force by police than more force.
Yes, police and Mayor Kathy Sheehan got what they wanted the tents and the people who occupied them ousted from around South Station. Chief Eric Hawkins got his clear, safe space. But as effective as the methods may have been, we can’t help but wonder if they could otherwise have been unnecessary. ....

Protestors Cleared From Albany Encampment

Albany Police cleared protestors from an encampment outside South Station Thursday afternoon in what became a tense scene. South End streets had been blocked off for several days following a clash between protestors and police April 14 that city officials labeled a riot.
Just after 3 p.m., Police Chief Eric Hawkins tweeted it was time for demonstrators to go after six days. A few minutes later, police starting moving through the camp. WAMC’s Southern Adirondack Bureau Chief Lucas Willard was on the scene.

Albany police officers toppled a protest camp that had grown over days outside one of their police stations and made several arrests in an ongoing feud with demonstraters that ended in a simmering standoff on Thursday night.
Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins ordered the end of what he said was an unlawful occupation by protesters camped for days outside the Albany Police Department s Thursday afternoon.

Days-long Albany protest ends in confrontation with police

There was a great deal of resistance and scuffles with police. Protesters were wrestled to the ground, handcuffed, and arrested.
The tents, sleeping bags, and portable heaters were left strewn across the pavement. DGS crews were cleaning everything up, including power washing graffiti off buildings.
