April 7, 2021 5:24 pm This year’s Designers in Residence programme has revealed its digital showcase, with four projects revolving around the theme of care. The responses to 2020’s theme have been cross-discipline, from care packages which make use of illustration to a series of digital walks which encourage people to interact with the natural world. Designers in Residence is an annual programme at London’s Design Museum, where designers are invited for a ten-month residency to explore a chosen theme. This year, the programme’s 13th, boasted an all female line-up. Although the theme of care was chosen before the pandemic, it has taken on new meaning during the pandemic, according to senior curator of public programmes Sumitra Upham. ....
A series of giant patchwork quilts, stitched by Lewisham residents, have been put on display in the window of Deptford Lounge. The colourful quilts were stitched by members of the community as part of the 12-week Patched Together project, run by sewing school Make Mee Studio. During lockdown the company delivered free textile kits across Lewisham, working with Voluntary Services Lewisham, Evelyn Community Store, Mind, Bring Me Sunshine and others. The kits included equipment and instructions for a range of textile crafts. Over 430 patches were completed and sewn into large quilts. After Deptford the quilts will tour exhibition venues around the borough. ....

Lewisham firefighters have been busy over lockdown. Firefighting crews in Lewisham have managed to deliver over 400 food parcels to vulnerable residents during the Covid-19 pandemic. Local London Fire Brigade (LFB) staff have gone above and beyond to help their local community, delivering meals to elderly and vulnerable residents and even receiving a helping hand from a celebrity chef. Station Commander Nathan Hobson said his firefighters have overcome challenges and worked incredibly hard to continue to support community initiatives and local partners during the global pandemic. Working with partners Voluntary Services Lewisham (VSL), over 400 food parcels were delivered by Lewisham LFB. ....
A community initiative in Chinbrook has been feeding people struggling from food poverty throughout the pandemic. The hyper-local initiative is funded by the Big Local programme, which focuses on areas of deprivation across the UK with a historic lack of investment. Chinbrook Action Residents Team (ChART) looks into specific community initiatives that would benefit local residents. Marie Griffin, community project manager with ChART, said: “It’s all about getting people involved and to take ownership of what happens in their local area.” ChART’s Community Food Project was set up in late 2019 for those struggling with food poverty. Since the outbreak of Covid-19, it has quickly become one of ChART’s key services to the local community. ....
