A series of giant patchwork quilts, stitched by Lewisham residents, have been put on display in the window of Deptford Lounge. The colourful quilts were stitched by members of the community as part of the 12-week Patched Together project, run by sewing school Make Mee Studio. During lockdown the company delivered free textile kits across Lewisham, working with Voluntary Services Lewisham, Evelyn Community Store, Mind, Bring Me Sunshine and others. The kits included equipment and instructions for a range of textile crafts. Over 430 patches were completed and sewn into large quilts. After Deptford the quilts will tour exhibition venues around the borough. ....

Three volunteers at a community store dedicated to tackling food poverty in Lewisham have been named borough mayoresses for the second year running. Dawn Atkinson, Natasha Ricketts and Christine Norman set up the Evelyn Community Store two years ago, supporting hundreds of families on low income to buy food at affordable costs. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the number of residents using the store has more than trebled to around 500 members on average. Dawn Atkinson, Mayoress of Lewisham, said: “It’s an absolute privilege to be asked by Damien to stay on as Mayoresses for another year. “This year has been exceptionally challenging and through our work at the community store we have seen first-hand just how hard hit Lewisham families have been. We are honoured to be able to work for the people of Lewisham. ....
