A new name for the Athlone Institute of Technology will be made known in the coming weeks.
A public consultation process has taken place for the institution, which has now been designated university status in partnership with Limerick IT. It s hoped students graduating this year will have university recognition, and while all home students will be back on site by September, international students may have to be taught remotely until they return in early 2022.
There has been a fall of over 23 per cent in international students since the pandemic began and President of AIT, Professor Ciarán Ó Catháin says work is underway with partners in China, India and Malaysia to see students return in increased numbers. ....

The announcement today that the Midlands is to get a new Technological University has been welcomed by Laois/Offaly Fine Gael TD, Charlie Flanagan.
“This is a great day for the Laois/Offaly and the Midlands area and this morning’s announcement will not only benefit students and staff but also businesses and communities.
“A large number of students across the Laois/Offaly constituency attend AIT and they will now be able to study in a university closer to their home. This will not only help address the regional imbalance but it will also increase opportunities for students, enterprise and regional stakeholders, Deputy Flanagan said. ....

A NEW TECHNOLOGICAL university for Ireland’s Midlands has been announced by Minister for Further Education Simon Harris.
Harris said today that Athlone Institute of Technology and Limerick Institute of Technology will amalgamate to form a new technological university.
“The higher education landscape is rapidly evolving and the people of the Midlands and Mid-West will henceforth be at the heart both geographically and practically of that evolution,” he said. ....

Minister Harris grants Technological University status to Athlone and Limerick Institutes of Technology

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD has today (5 May 2021) granted Technological University (TU) status to Athlone Institute of Technology and Limerick Institute of Technology.
This is the third TU to be created since 2019 and is a milestone for the Midlands and the Mid-West.
Minister Harris said:
This is another hugely important day for higher education in Ireland and in particular for the Midlands and Mid-West regions.
The higher education landscape is rapidly evolving and the people of the Midlands and Mid-West will be at the heart both geographically and practically of that evolution. ....
