BONNER COUNTY, Idaho While people may normally think of fighting wildfires as protecting homes and saving lives, crews at the Trestle Creek Complex Fire in North Idaho have another focus.
Crews are also working to protect Bull Trout, a species of Char that calls the cold waters of Trestle Creek home. It is a threatened species, which means it is a species considered at risk of being endangered. ....

Slightly Cooler Weather Could Be Help, Hindrance To NW Firefighters

Cooler temperatures and a bit more humidity are expected to help Northwest firefighters for the next day or two. But the winds from the west that are moderating temperatures may also help spread flames and embers from existing fires.
Fire officials are making slow progress on some of the biggest fires. For example, the Chuweah Creek fire that has been threatening the town of Nespelem has spread to about 34,000 acres. Fire crews say they have it about 20% contained.
Others, such as the Burbank fire, which has been burning in the Yakima area for more than a week, are fully or nearly fully contained. ....

The State Of Northwest Fires At The Beginning Of The Week

Wildfire season has intensified in the Inland Northwest, with the central Idaho mountains and the area where Washington, Oregon and Idaho meet as the hot spots.
In the latter, the Snake River complex of fires has burned more than 54,000 acres on the Idaho side of Snake River as it forms the border with Washington. It is 0% contained.
The Shovel Creek fire is part of that Snake River complex. It is burning in grass and timber and is threatening structures.
The Dry Gulch fire has covered about 47,000 acres of tall grass, brush and timber near Asotin in southeastern Washington. It was caused by lightning on Wednesday. Six outbuildings have burned. The fires is threatening 450 homes, 20 multiple residences and 50 other minor structures. Some residents in the area were required to leave home Saturday night. ....

Idaho Club-Lakeside Development Threatens Protected Bull Trout Habitat
SANDPOINT,
Idaho Conservation groups filed a formal notice today of their intent to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Army Corps of Engineers and Trestle Creek Investments for approving the Idaho Club-Lakeside luxury housing and marina development near Trestle Creek, one of the most important bull trout spawning streams in the Pacific Northwest.
The planned development calls for the construction of five single-family luxury homes, a boat ramp, two docks and 124 boat slips. It would require the excavation of an island and peninsula and would discharge thousands of tons of concrete, soil and rock into Lake Pend Oreille near the mouth of Trestle Creek. ....
