Some of the happiest, most liberated people I know ride bikes. For fun. For exercise. For transportation. They get to experience the lambent air at twilight, find just the right parking place, ride under a canopy of trees and clouds. I know. I know. It’s dangerous. Drivers are unconscious. Our grand and glorious city leaders don’t help. Their minds are elsewhere, too. They talk a good game but when it comes to transportation and budgets it’s mostly about cars and trucks and road repair and SPLOST, that mysterious special purpose local option sales tax. Many within our Black community suffer from chronic sicknesses, like diabetes and heart disease. This is no surprise when so much of the neighborhoods where those Black people live lack sidewalks or any other safe means to travel without an automobile. It is a five-year grant, originally awarded in 2019 for $3.4 million. We are in year three of the grant. ....

The Tybee Post Theater’s record-setting Tybee Polar Plunge will be semi-virtual this year without an official event at the Tybee Pier and Pavilion, but I suspect that south beach will still be bustling at noon on New Year’s Day. Wormsloe State Historic Site is offering 2.5 mile hikes guided by rangers on Jan. 1. Pets on short leashes are welcome, but folks need to call the office at 912-353-3023 for reservations. Sulfur Art Services and Green Truck Pub are currently presenting Single-Use Sketch Studies: the U.S. Two-Party System by Corey J. Willis at the Drive Thru Art Box at the restaurant at 2430 Habersham St. ....
Enmarket Encourage Health lecture series explores healthy walking routes Christopher Berinato For the past seven years, the Enmarket Encourage Health Education Series has been presenting lunch time lectures devoted to educating people on healthy eating habits and exercise. This year the series has been forced to switch to a live stream format, but continues to present excellent speakers who are knowledgeable on a variety of health related subjects. On Jan. 7, the next entry in the series will feature Armand Turner, Healthy Savannah / YMCA of Coastal Georgia Physical Activity Program Manager. Turner has been working with Healthy Savannah for the last three years through the Racial & Ethnic Approaches to Community Health grant, or REACH. ....
