'Have your say on Dorset buses with National Bus Strategy'

It was a pleasure to read Chris Loder’s column last week about the recently announced “National Bus Strategy” and we must be grateful that we have a MP for whom public transport provision is such a high priority.
It is also encouraging the Government has finally recognised the importance of an effective, convenient and inexpensive bus service to provide connectivity between communities, and become a genuine alternative to the private car.
There is also acceptance that – in order to achieve the zero carbon commitments that the Government has made – public transport will play a key role.
The BUS BACK BETTER paper, launched on 15 March and which can be downloaded (https:// www.gov.uk/government/ publications/bus-back-better), is well worth reading, and spells out what is expected from the Local Transport Authorities (in our case Dorset Council) and the Bus Companies. ....

AFTER more than a decade of campaigning, disabled users of Dorchester’s West station will no longer have to travel to Weymouth and then back again to head north.
A new no-step access ramp is being created to take passengers to the northbound platform from a specially built layby in Williams Avenue.
Retired Dorchester councillor Trevor Jones, who started fighting for improved access more than 10 years ago, says he still finds it hard to believed that it is happening - after being told several times in the past that work was ‘imminent . ....

Works to remove Victorian sewer from West Bay beach on hold

WORK to remove a Victorian brick sewer from a West Bay beach has been put on hold - as the sewer is buried deeper in the sand than originally thought.
Wessex Wessex had planned to remove the remains of the sewer along with other redundant infrastructure on East Beach over the next three weeks. However, the company s GPS surveys have shown that the sewere is now located deeper within the sand than at the turn of the year.
As the pipework poses no environmental or safety risks and the beach remains in good condition, engineers will instead monitor the site over the spring and summer months with a view to rescheduling removal work later this year. ....
