NEW HANOVER COUNTY –– The secretary of the New Hanover County Democratic Party and two elected Democrat officials are petitioning for the removal of the party’s chair, first vice chair and second vice chair after a contentious meeting last month.
Filed in early July, the petition alleges chair Andre Brown, first vice chair Victoria Garcia Velazco and second vice chair Susanne Werner violated the party’s code of conduct, initiated a closed session for impermissible reasons, failed to publicize meetings and prevented fellow officers from carrying out their duties. ....

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) -
The Wilmington Journal, North Carolina’s oldest African-American newspaper, is in financial trouble and a fundraiser is underway to save the newspaper.
Dorian Cromartie, who organized fundraiser along with Deborah Maxwell, President of the New Hanover County NAACP, said the newspaper is an important resource for Wilmington’s black community.
“They’ve been here for almost 100 years, 93 years now,” he said. “It started out providing the community but specifically the Black community with news and headlines that are going on not only locally but on a state level and on a national level. So, it’s very important that they remain here in the community. ....

GoFundMe campaign seeks to save The Wilmington Journal amid challenges


WILMINGTON – On Nov. 10, 1898, the office of The Daily Record, a Black-run newspaper published by Alexander Manly, was burned to the ground by a mob of white supremacists who would go on to lead a massacre through the Black community.
The loss of The Daily Record silenced the sole source of news for the Black residents of Wilmington and left a void that wouldn’t be filled until 1927 when The Wilmington Journal printed its first issue with a mission that took up the mantle of its predecessor.
Today, the Journal has 93 years of weekly issues in its archives, but the pains of continued media constriction, the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges have put its future in jeopardy, something community members are looking to reverse. ....
