Pitino leads Iona to MAAC Championship, NCAA tourney bid (0:42)
Rick Pitino s Iona Gaels take down Fairfield 60-51 to win the MAAC championship and advance to the NCAA tournament. (0:42)
One day shy of the one-year anniversary of Iona hiring Rick Pitino, the Hall of Fame coach has led the Gaels to the NCAA men s basketball tournament.
Iona defeated Fairfield60-51 in the MAAC title game on Saturday in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Gaels never trailed and finished the first half on a 10-0 run, giving them a 12-point lead they wouldn t come close to relinquishing. They extended the lead to as many as 16 points in the second half, led by the senior backcourt of Asante Gist (18 points) and Isaiah Ross (13 points).

I mentioned in the last recap that Florida State has had Louisville’s number in the past. They’ve won 4 of the last 5 games against the Cards including handing them their last heartbreaking loss in the ACC Tournament last season. After the game Dana Evans said, “It still hurts me from last year so I made sure we were ready to play today.”
Her teammates did not disappoint.
After a little sloppiness in the first quarter the Cards got into the flow and tightened up their play. They had only one turnover in the second quarter and shot 68%. In the second half they played like a team who was determined to wipe away any lingering pain from the loss last season and absolutely dominated.

I’m not sure if anyone actually wants to claim an honor that would make them the face of Cardinal athletics in 2020, but hey, virtual traditions don’t brake for pandemics or canceled tournaments or anything else.
Please remember that the person of the year does not have to be an actual person (Touchdown Squirrel was a finalist a few years ago). This isn’t Sports Illustrated, it’s much, much more serious.
Here’s a rundown of the winners from previous years:
