Michelle Zauner never much cared for nonfiction. “I wanted to write like the dirty realist white male writers who felt truly literary to me,” she says on the phone from Brooklyn in early March. “Philip Roth or Raymond Carver or Tobias Wolff or John Updike.” In high school, she contributed columns to Eugene’s
Register-Guard, but by the time she enrolled in Bryn Mawr’s creative writing program as an undergrad, she’d lost interest in journalism and identity-centric personal narratives. “I didn’t really want to write stories frontloaded with pretext, like, ‘My father’s Caucasian, my mom’s Asian.’ I didn’t want to lay that out. I just wanted to dive into whateve ....

Novelist Maggie Shipstead and "Great Circle"

It may seem odd that Maggie Shipstead ’05, whose third novel,
Great Circle, arrives this spring, didn’t grow up wanting to be a writer. The current Los Angeles resident born in Orange County, but peripatetic for a few years in-between remembers reading as having a more prominent role in her life than writing. Her mother, she says, sometimes suggested otherwise, “Like, ‘Well, maybe…you’ll be a writer one day,’ and I was really resistant to that idea.”
Harvard was a clearer path: her father attended the College, and her mother the Graduate School of Education. Shipstead says she entered as an “aggressive” high-school graduate, but the environment caused some culture shock. She started two days after 9/11, and still recalls the palpable sorrow hanging over fellow students, many of them East Coasters. With time, she learned to temper her competitiveness and immerse herself in the academic experience. “My freshman year I got a B, and I’d never gotten ev ....

Liz Soares: Ken Burns documentaries are a feast of storytelling complexity
Burns latest, Hemingway, is both biography and literary analysis, illustrating once again everything that is enthralling about the landmark documentary filmmaker, Liz Soares writes.

The filmmaker Ken Burns came to Bates College in the mid 1980s to show his documentary “The Shakers: Hands to Work, Hearts to God.” My husband, Paul, and I were living in Lewiston at the time and went to the program. This was Burns’ second production and we didn’t know anything about him. I think we attended because of the topic. ....

Television Review: 'Hemingway' Documentary Explores Defining American Artist

Hemingway takes in the genius, the agony, and the sins of this defining American artist.
Ernest Hemingway’s first wife, Hadley Richardson, said there were “so many sides to him he defied geometry.” A man’s man who liked to be called “Catherine” in bed, an apostle of frankness who often lied about his feats, a libertarian who spied for Stalin, he left us with a biography as overstuffed as his work was lean. He was an object of fascination like no other writer, and he receives his due in the superb new documentary

Hemingway on PBS: The American writer who sought "the truest sentence that you know"

Hemingway, a documentary series by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, premiered on PBS April 5. Its three parts, each approximately two hours, are now available online. It is eminently worth watching.
Ernest Hemingway (1899–1961) was one of the most important American novelists and short-story writers of the 20th century, and a literary figure with an immense global influence and following.
He is best known for his three most significant novels,
The Sun Also Rises (1926),
A Farewell to Arms (1929) and
For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940), as well as innumerable and often scintillating short stories and nonfiction works. Hemingway wrote about the two world wars and the Spanish Civil War. He also wrote about love affairs, personal betrayal and suicide, as well as bullfighting, big-game hunting and deep-sea fishing. ....
