A historic vote: Common Council approves Reimagining Public Safety resolution

ITHACA, NY Ithacaâs Common Council unanimously voted to approve the Reimagining Public Safety resolution on March 31. The resolution was due to the governorâs office on April 1 after Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed executive order 203 last summer, whichrequired municipalities to reexamine their law enforcement agencies through the lens of marginalized communities in an effort to reduce unequitable policing toward Black and brown communities.
The monumental vote came after six weeks of meetings and public forums in which everyone from council members, residents, parents of college students and Ithaca police officers had the chance to share their opinions.Â

Ithaca police accuse mayor of union busting, express concerns about reform proposal

ITHACA, NY Ithaca police officers showed up in numbers to the March 3 Common Council meeting to voice their opinions on the Reimagining Police draft proposal that was announced at the end of February. Recommendation one of the draft proposes replacing the Ithaca Police Department (IPD) with the Community Solutions and Public Safety Department, which would consist of both armed and unarmed workers to respond to the litany of calls the police currently deal with.
Loretta Tomberelli, an IPD sergeant, said she loves Ithaca and the community that she serves and that the proposal makes her feel unappreciated.
âI feel that I am seen as not human by the city administration,â she said. âItâs like I donât matter. I give everything every day, day in and day out, but I feel like just a number. Like a something, not someone, that just isnât needed [â¦] IPD is the most progressive police department I know, and we are open to change and open to discuss ....

It s no mean feat creating a TV series about chess that s compelling viewing. Two people
eyeballing wooden figures on a board is not exactly a recipe for riveting visual drama.
But the makers of the Netflix series The Queen s Gambit have done such a good job with the story of a chess prodigy with addiction issues that it became the most popular scripted series on the streaming site, and is being credited with reviving interest in the game around the world. ....
