Kump Education Center continues to add apples to the wooden tree in our learning lab to honor beloved schoolteachers. This week we honor a teacher who has been nominated by two donors because his individual tutoring made such a difference in the lives of two students. This amazing teacher and friend of fearful learners is K.J. Shaffer who also serves as the president of the Kump Education Center Board of Directors.
Judy Guye-Swanson who also serves on the KEC Board wrote the following: “I would like to nominate K.J. Shaffer as an Apple for the Teacher tree. He was so kind and empathetic with my grandson in a particularly hard time for my grandson and family a few years ago. He made my grandson feel comfortable … and seemed to bond with him. He is a special person and has a caring and warm heart.” ....

Conference center construction grows nearer as final details are sorted out

ITHACA, NY The Planning and Economic Development Committee (PEDC) had a lengthy discussion before narrowly approving the Disposition and Development Agreement (DDA) for the Green Street Garage Urban Renewal Project with a 3-2 vote. The DDA will move on to Common Council for approval.
The DDA provides for the disposition and development of the site currently owned by the city and authorized to be transferred to the Ithaca Urban Renewal Agency (IURA) to âimplement an urban renewal project in accordance with all applicable laws,â according to the agreement. The developer is then bound by the terms and conditions set forth in the agreement. ....

Jersey Shore Ex-Bloomberg Construction Chief Gets 3½ Years In Fed Pen For Bid-Rigging Scheme

A former construction executive with Bloomberg LP was sentenced to 3½ years in federal prison Tuesday in connection for masterminding a bid-rigging scheme that prosecutors said netted him an estimated $1.45 million in bribes.
Anthony Guzzone of Middletown admitted last summer that he ducked taxes on the dirty money by not reporting it to the IRS.
It was part of more than $6 million that federal authorities said he and other Bloomberg managers collected – in cash – from subcontractors over more than eight years
Guzzone, 52, also got free construction work on his home and tickets to the Super Bowl and other major events, said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Richard E. Zuckerman of the U.S. Justice Department’s Tax Division. ....
