Mansfield Police Department short staffed

View Comments MANSFIELD - Seven members of the Mansfield Police Department will retire on or before June 2, requiring police Chief Keith Porch to put some personnel back on patrol temporarily. And sick leave, maternity leave and administrative leave on the force also has caused the chief to pull some officers back to patrol duties.  Three officers have retired since Jan. 1 - officers Rich Dittrich and Jeff McKinley and Capt. Doug Noblet. Officers Ron Barnes, Orlando Chatman and Andy Boor and assistant Chief Joe Petrycki will retire on or before June 2. The total number of officers on patrol is 39 with 12 supervisors, Porch said.

John Mack Jr indicted for murder in death of ex-girlfriend

View Comments MANSFIELD - John Mack Jr. could face the death penalty if convicted on aggravated murder charges in the death of his ex-girlfriend, Melinda Kay Davis. Mack was indicted on 17 counts Wednesday including aggravated murder, kidnapping, and tampering with evidence. Davis, 33, of Shelby, was reported missing Feb. 25 and her body was found in the trunk of her car March 14 in an apartment parking lot on the western edge of Columbus. A Richland County grand jury met in a special session this month and found that Davis death occurred while the offender was committing, attempting to commit, or fleeing immediately after committing or attempting to commit kidnapping and either the offender was the principal offender in the commission of the aggravated murder or, if not the principal offender, committed the aggravated murder with prior calculation and design.  

Sheriff s deputy rescues 3 goats dumped on Sites Road

View Comments MANSFIELD - The person who dumped three baby goats along the railroad tracks on Sites Road around 6 p.m. Wednesday could be facing criminal charges. Richland County Sheriff s Capt. Donald Zehner said dispatchers received a call from someone who witnessed a red truck dump the three goats and leave the scene. Zehner said early Wednesday evening he was caring for the goats short term at his farm. He estimated the goats are under six months old. Deputy Owen Ross rescued the goats and put them in his cruiser and brought them to Zehner s farm. Wednesday night, the goats owner Danny Boyd posted on Facebook that his goats were missing. He doesn t live too far from Sites Road. He said he thought they got loose.

Board votes to terminate two Clear Fork kitchen workers contracts MANSFIELD - The Clear Fork Board of Education Thursday night voted to terminate employment contracts of two Butler Elementary School kitchen employees who are facing criminal charges. Friday morning, Clear Fork Schools Superintendent Janice Wyckoff said the board voted in Thursday s regular meeting to terminate the employment contracts of Jodi Kline, cafeteria manager; and Suzanne Keller, employed under a non-teaching employee contract as a cafeteria worker/cashier assigned to Butler Elementary School and as a bus driver. What are the charges? Diane Pyle, 55, of Fredericktown; Kline, 51, of Butler; and Keller, 50, of Butler, were charged in February with stealing food from the Clear Fork Butler Elementary School kitchen for personal use, and one was accused by school officials of butchering a pig and deer meat for personal use in the school s kitchen.
